Have to fight fight fight, if you want to win win win!
Get the game walkthrough guide for Dawn of Discovery for the PC PS3 Wii and Nintendo DS. Absolutely all online walkthrough strategy guides are right here!

Dawn of Discovery by Ubisoft is a great game based on economics done in a well designed smart and intriguing way. The game is a best seller in the single-player strategy genre. If you are looking to fight, destroy and blast your way to success, this game isn't for you. However, if acquiring a vast empire of the Occident and the Orient rings true to your interest, this title (especially the windows release) can keep your interest for hundreds of hours for years to come!

Ubisoft, the game developer, has titled the game Dawn of Discovery in North America while naming it Anno 1404 everywhere else. (The game is set in the early 15th century.) After all, the broad American user has never been that great at history, particularly when it comes to times before our own. Ubisoft is French, but the game's computer programmer, Related Designs, is German, and Dawn of Discovery is the quintessence of the German game. Dawn of Discovery Walkthrough Strategy Game Guide

It almost goes without saying that American media products are far more filled with depictions of vehemency than European ones. Having received war and genocide at home quite recently, Europeans are far less captivated than Americans are of turning ferocity into amusement.

That counterpoint is obscure and much clearer than in video games. American games are broadly speaking the most violent in the world, followed closely by Japanese ones. But Germany is especially vigilant when it comes to expunging the most violent scenes from games sold in that country. Some particularly gory games (and many, if not all, of those involving Nazis) are forbidden to be on sale in Germany.

That shying away from violence does not include only video games. Recently a new wave of nonelectronic German board games has found an eager consultation around the world, including in the United States. In many ways Dawn of Discovery is closer to great German board games like Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan than it is to most American computer strategy style video games.

Catan and Puerto Rico are about trading and bartering with other players and building up your mini-empire, not about demolishing your enemies by force. Nintendo DS and Wii Game Walkthrough for Dawn of Discovery Guide Dawn of Discovery is different from American real-time strategy computer games like StarCraft and Command & Conquer for just this reason.

Many American gamers are familiar with empire-building only through turn-based games like Civilization. Dawn of Discovery is a real-time game, so the action unfolds instantly not allowing you to waste time during gameplay, rather than pausing while you queue up orders and moves turn by turn. Yet Dawn of Discovery is unique from and more interesting than most real-time games a couple ways.

The main thing with most real-time strategy games is that eventually they simply overwhelm the player with too many small details than one wants to deal with. Send some tanks over here, respond to an enemy incursion over there, order 10 more battleships or what have you, all with very little time to respond. Most real-time strategy games degrade into a contest of who can keep the most balls in the air the longest. They can feel cheap.

Dawn of Discovery does a masterful job of allowing players to focus on the big picture of their developing empires while the scut work of moving goods around and carrying off trade routes can largely take care of itself. The player can dive into the detailed points at any time, but in general if I'm going to take a beating in a strategy game, I want it to be because of a high-level strategic misestimating, not because I didn't fine-tune my crops output to the correct minuscule measurement.

The other difference that distinguishes Dawn of Discovery is that while combat is the entire foundation of most strategy games, it is almost an second thought in Dawn of Discovery — a natural, organic, almost adjunct outgrowth of an empire's growing commercial power and appetite. The game makes it so hypnotic and enjoyable to build a settlement from huts to town houses, to build churches and bazaars and spice farms and stone quarries, that it's easy to forget about the naval encounters and clashes. Dawn of Discovery Game Strategy Help Guide and Faqs

In its intricate and well-drawn story line Dawn of Discovery is anti-colonial. The player begins as a minor noble in what is called an Occidental empire and is soon tasked with establishing relations with and exploring the Orient. The Orient, with its gorgeous Middle Eastern architecture, is basically populated by the good guys. The bad guys are the zealous Crusaders from the Occident who want to exploit the Orient. Ideally the player ends up defeating the bad guys and restoring peace and justice to the Occident.

Dawn of Discovery is also available for Nintendo's Wii and DS, but this is really a game with its soul on the PC. The story-driven campaign mode is extremely well paced. We have spent full nights and weekends (not to mention cross-country plane flights) will inevitably be occupied in sandbox mode. For the a strategically intellectual gamer the passing time is hard pressed for a better way to spend it.

Continuous Play offers exactly what its title suggests, the ability for players to start their own civilizations free from the trappings of a linear narrative and artificial objectives. Various settings can be tweaked before play begins, from starting and victory conditions to the characteristics of the world itself, offering plenty of opportunities for players to tailor their experience to fit their needs. There's a lot of flexibility within the provided options, allowing everything from tense standoffs between two dueling nations to peaceful games meant simply to test how large one can expand their empire. Scenarios offer more guided experiences, setting variables in advance and offering specific objectives through each of Dawn of Discovery's three difficulty levels.

The uninterrupted nature of Continuous Play is where Dawn of Discovery's design and mechanics are really put to the test, and to the title's credit it manages to hold up fairly well even after a continuous playtime reaching into the double digit hours. The game's pace is fairly steady throughout, offering a consistent ramp from the early lumber yards and cider mills to the balancing act of later yields that require multiple resources across varying levels of production. The Full Online Dawn of Discovery Walkthru Game Strategy Guide Here Dawn of Discovery's complex advancement tree threatens to collapse in on itself later on as financial resources stretch thin and each new upgrade requires an increasing amount of tributary products in order to run. This issue can largely be avoided by carefully planning out building arrangements ahead of time, though learning how to do so is really only possible after completing multiple sessions.

The graphics are wonderfully detailed.Combat mechanics are one of the few instances in which Dawn of Discovery falls short. More often than not, naval combat is simply reduced to two ships exchanging cannon fire on open waters until one ship simply explodes and sinks to the bottom of the ocean. It's a disappointingly simple system considering how deep the rest of the game is. Sure, Dawn of Discovery is essentially a game about production and trade, but that doesn't mean the combat should be given a free pass. Providing the game with a method of battle involving true strategy and control would have vaulted Dawn of Discovery up into the realms of other classic strategy titles like Civilization, but as it is the combat is simply an unfortunate reminder of what could have been.

One thing Blue Byte Software and Related Designs absolutely nailed are Dawn of Discovery's gorgeous visuals. Each building is lovingly crafted and highly detailed, from the fluttering sails of trade ships to the crooked shingles of a commoner's homestead. Colony citizens will mill about town and congregate in high traffic areas like bazaars or taverns while market wagons weave between production mills, their wagons visibly empty or full depending on the direction they're heading. The outcome is an extremely appealing artistic style that simultaneously manages to visually inform players as to the status of their colonies. The only real flaw is evident when zooming right up next to buildings from afar, as high-polygon textures take a second or two to pop into place over the default facade. It's a trivial gripe, to be sure, and definitely a forgivable offense considering how detailed the world of Dawn of Discovery truly is.

The one area in which Dawn of Discovery truly disappoints is the fact that it provides absolutely no multiplayer support. As much replay value as the single-player content provides, there's really no excuse as to why a game like this wouldn't support multiple players. Playing Continuous Play with this truth in mind is all the more disheartening, as the mode is so clearly perfect for online play and yet we're left to compete against static AI opponents.

Dawn of Discovery provides one of the best real-time strategy experiences of the year, hands down. Fans of city-building simulators will be floored by the amount of depth evidenced by the game's mechanics, though it may be a bit too complex for casual fans of the genre. A few minor hiccups surrounding the campaign such as some unclear objectives and unexplained features don't hold back the experience too much, and the Continuous Play mode theoretically offers hundreds of hours of engaging colony management. Dawn of Discovery would have no doubt benefitted greatly from the inclusion of multiplayer, but the fact that it still manages to provide such a complex, lasting experience is a testament to the extremely high quality of its overall design.
