With Enslaved and the forthcoming The Last Guardian, ’buddy’ games are becoming fashionable, their setup offering both narrative and mechanical advantages to the designer of adventure videogames. I really don’t think this game stinks, I mean I enjoyed it mostly. Game Republic’s effort lacks polish and elegance, but, thanks to charm and the in-built strength of its setup, it’s an experience worth partnering with. The Majin is every thing that Ico’s Yorda isn’t. The beginning and ending of Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom are beautifully displayed and really something to be remembered. In Fumito Ueda’s classic, you lead the waif-like girl-child along a castle’s craggy ramparts, crying out to her to follow your footsteps, catching her by her wrist when she falls, and batting away the black ghouls that tug at her bright white dress. It’s a game about custody, about caring for a person weaker than your self at the expense of the speed of your progress - a rare theme in a medium obsessed with the relentless exertion of power and dominance over other people in search of the quickest route to a objective. Mainly I feel that the game seems to be lacking in very necessary functionality in this particular style of gaming. Ostensibly, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom shares the theme. This is one of those titles i’ve been waiting for just to get my hands on it to review it, and well, it’s definately one i’ll be playing all the way through or for manymany hours to get the most out of it.
